Census Job Testing to be Held at Cherokee Nation

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The Cherokee Nation will be a host site in March for pre-employment testing for anyone interested in working for the 2010 U.S. Census.
The U.S. Census Bureau is hiring for thousands of jobs that are short-term, offer good pay, have flexible hours, paid training and reimbursement for authorized work-related expenses, such as mileage incurred while conducting census work. Every 10 years, the Census Bureau takes a snapshot of the U.S. population, determining how many people reside within the nation's borders, who they are, and where they live. The results help determine representation in government, as well as how federal funds are spent in local communities on things like roads, parks, housing, schools, and public safety. Census workers play a vital role in making sure that everyone is counted.
All census takers must be able to speak English, but people who have bilingual skills are needed in communities where a large number of residents primarily speak other languages, such as Spanish or Cherokee. Those who have the appropriate language skills and cultural knowledge to communicate well in their communities are encouraged to apply.
The Census test is designed to measure skills, abilities and knowledge required to perform a variety of census jobs. A practice test is available online at http://2010.census.gov/2010censusjobs/documents/Practice_Test.pdf
If you are interested in becoming a census taker or applying for other census-related jobs, testing will be held Wednesday, March 10 and again on Tuesday, March 23, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Tribal Services conference room at the Cherokee Nation tribal complex located at 17675 S. Muskogee Ave., south of Tahlequah.
