Cherokee Nation to Host Veterans Focus Group

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — In partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Cherokee Nation is hosting a focus group on Thursday, March 11, at 7 p.m., for recently separated veterans to discuss the employment needs of Native American veterans in this area.

Representatives from the U.S. Department of Labor and Oklahoma Workforce will be on hand to gather information from local veterans, which will be incorporated into a national report to Congress regarding recommendations for improving employment and job training opportunities for Native American veterans. Organizers would like to meet with at least a dozen veterans that have separated from military service within the last eight years, but would welcome others to participate, as well.

“This is a chance to voice your concerns about employment needs of Native American and other veterans living on tribal lands,” said Rogan Noble with the Cherokee Nation Veterans Affairs Office.  “We need your input so that community outreach programs get the word out to all veterans about employment, training and other opportunities that may or may not be common knowledge. If you feel that more community involvement would help you or other community members, please be there.”

The meeting will take place in the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council Chambers, located in the tribal complex, 17675 S. Muskogee Ave., south of Tahlequah. It is anticipated to last about two hours.

For more information, please contact Noble at (918) 453-5695.
